We have it installed on the water line that supplies the drinking water faucet & refrigerator ice maker. We put it in the basement so it's easy to access/change the filter.
Update 12/09: We also use this filter in our primary home for the water line supplying the refrigerator. This house has a very different water issue: hard water. We previously used a Brita filter/pitcher for making coffee/tea because it stopped hard water deposits from forming in our pot. But that system was so slow & took space in the refrigerator so we switched to this filter. Unfortunately, it does not remove the hard water/lime. So the pot has to be "delimed" regularly. Also doesn't stop the buildup of lime in the refrigerator ice maker/water dispenser.
Was not happy w/the way this was packaged for shipping. There was no filler around the filter boxes (c'mon, who doesn't have a little newspaper or something around to use in packing???). So the filters rattled around the box & 2 (of 3) were out of the product packaging. Luckily, it doesn't appear that they were damaged but will consider another company to order these from next time.

"Easy to install"2009-05-16 By Austin Mama The filters were surprisingly easy to install. The instructions provided in the package were well written and understandable and I had my new filters in place and operational in a minimal amount of time. Our water is now drinkable again.
As for the vendor, we received the order in the amount of time stated (7 - 10 days) and had no billing errors so we're happy on that front as well.

This is what you get when your catridges need replacing on your AP-DWS1000 Drinking Water System. Our AquaPure just stopped working one day; the water wouldn't flow out. It's because we hit the 625 gallon limit. So, that's the "clear indication" you need to buy the new cartridges. When you replace the old ones, be sure to have a mixing bowl or bucket to catch the water that will spill out. I checked with company (which is owned by 3M). Unfortunately the old cartridges cannot be recycled at this time. What a waste! That's why I deducted one star.
Anyway, putting in the replacements is pretty easy: turn off the water supply, lift up the plastic cap, and remove the old catridges. There is an order to re-installing them, so pay attention to cartridge #1 versus #2. Then spin the little dial to give you 625 more gallons of filtered water.

I installed it within 10 minutes, and had the water flowing thru the filter for the 5 minute conditioning. Afterwards, the filtered water tasted GREAT...as good as or better than the Aquafina water we've been buying lately. Our normal tap water has a metallic/chlorine taste, and is just horrible. With the amount of money we've been dropping on 24 packs of the 16oz Aquafina bottles, I figured it would be a good idea to see if the Brita filter could transform our tap water into a suitable substitute. It sure did! Definitely recommended.

If you already bought Brita On Tap, then you have just two choices for new filters: white or chrome. For my kitchen, I prefer chrome.
These filters are expensive and they only seem to last a few weeks before the green light turns amber, then red, indicating that a replacement is needed. Don't trust the light. Try removing the filter cartridge, shaking it, and replacing it. In my experience, this almost always makes the light turn green again. These should each last months of casual use (~1 gallon per day), not weeks.

I see complaints about this product all over the net. Why doesn't PUR recall this product?

"New Model - April 2010"2010-04-24 By A. Imamoto (Chicago, IL) I am pleasantly surprised this time by the new model with a completely new design. I ordered one to replace my old filter unit, as the old one (a year old) started to leak.
The filter housing is fixed at an upright position (no rotation), and the switch is placed on the right side of the unit - like more expensive PUR faucet filter models. The new model has an electronic water quality indicator that has replaced the old clear slot window. My previous leaking problem occurred at two positions - the indicator window and rotating junction for filtered water. So, it appears that PUR has devised these new design improvements to eliminate the causes of leaks. In addition, PUR includes a new joint mechanism to connect the filter unit to faucet - which is also a nice improvement. The 3 stage filter itself gives me a great taste, and successfully eliminates the odor of the Chicago water system.

We fill two 5 quart water dispensers and then store those in the fridge. The only thing I don't like is the cost of the filters, although I would say we probably don't spend as much money on filters as most people do on pop.
